Floor Sanding Tips

Before you start:
Read the following instructions right through before taking the first step.

1. Identify the first run to be made and place the machine at your chosen starting point. Make sure the control switch on the machine is off. Connect the power lead to the power source and turn on the power.
2. With the control switch still off, stand behind the machine and place the power lead over your shoulder. Tilt the machine back so that the drum is clear of the floor.

For the rotary sander, fit the disc to the base plate by means of the central screw or nut, or follow the supplier's directions.

Note: You will fit the next two grades of paper to both machines in the same way.

5. Continue this process until you have covered the full area to be sanded. When you have completed several runs, you may feel confident enough to pull the machine back into the tilted position without switching it off and on each time.
6. Sand the edges of the room using the rotary disc sander fitted with coarse abrasive paper.
To operate the rotary sander, place the lead over your shoulder and tilt the sander on its castors so that the disc is clear of the floor before you switch the machine on. Prepare yourself to control the sander, switch it on and lower it to make contact with the floor.

On contact, move the sander in a sweeping motion and keep it moving the whole time it's in contact with the floor.

USING THE SANDER
Floors are usually sanded at least three times, using three grades of abrasive paper.
If your floor is reasonably even, all sanding should be done parallel to the boards, beginning with the coarse grade of paper and ending with the fine.

3. Turn the machine on. Allow the drum to come gently into contact with the floor.
On contact, move off immediately, holding the machine in check so that you proceed with it at a slow but steady walking pace along a straight line. Don't allow the machine to stop in any one place while the sanding belt is in contact with the floor.
